SXSWedu...4 days before spring break

This week I have the opportunity to attend SXSWedu. One of my assistant principals sent me an email asking me if I wanted to attend in January. How could I pass up this opportunity? It sounded awesome and best of all--Bill Gates is giving the keynote speech. I can't wait to hear him speak.

SXSWedu is a forum/conference that looks at the future of education. There are panels, demonstrations, speakers, etc.
However, I feel a teeny bit guilty about this for several reasons.
One, I am out for four days the week before spring break. I am hoping my kids behave for my sub—I have no idea how it will go. I left plans that may or may not include hot guns, hammers, and massive amounts of cardboard. Just writing that sounds like a recipe for disaster.
Two, I am sitting here writing a blog.
I got here really early thinking the lines and parking would be insane. I did drive around for a few minutes, but not because it was crazy around here—but, because I have ZERO sense of direction.   I got through registration in less than 5 minutes.
I thought to bring my laptop because I knew I would have some down time. Nothing really starts until noon, I did think there would a place where we could walk around and get some free swag—however it appears that even that has gone digital. I guess I won’t get any more free lanyards or nasty pieces of candy.
On another note, I downloaded the SXSWedu app. It has the most up to date information and helps me to see my schedule very easily. I plan on attending different sessions that have to do with LEGO Mindstorms, STEM incorporating technology/digital ethics and gaming.
My goal is to take some of this newfound knowledge and incorporate it into a new class that I am creating for my middle schoolers for next year. I have a decent outline of what I want to teach but I think this conference could help give me a few more ideas.
I can’t wait.
I just hope no one burns themself with the hot glue guns that I may or may not have said they could use in my classroom...
